'Life as a Barrister' by Russell Davis

Russell Davis, a criminal barrister with over 20 years experience came in to speak to the Law students. He talked about the prolific cases he has worked on and gave fascinating facts of the case and how they were fought in the law courts. During his talk, he gave a fascinating insight into the role and mind set of a barrister that defends notorious criminals. Students asked questions about how the role affected his personal life and how he felt about defending guilty criminals. As part of his current role, Russell is involved in the recruitment of new barristers and he spoke of the requirements that he looks for when employing barristers and the difference between qualifying as a barrister and actually becoming a barrister. Russell gave his opinions on ‘Rights of Audience’, High Court Advocates and Funding in the High Court. All the way through the talk, he entertained the students with stories of his life as a barrister and upholding the many traditions attached to the profession. His speech was heartfelt and encouraging for all the students aspiring to have careers in law.
